"The
Fifteen Streets" - July 1998
'The
Fifteen Streets' was the groups first production.
We were in the situation that most new groups
must face, which is of course will any body
bother to come and watch us. We agonised at
length over a choice of play. We needed to
involve a rapidly increasing membership, which
even in the very early months of the groups
formation numbered over 20. We also wanted to
cater for a market that wasn't already being met
by several other excellent and well established
groups within the town.
We
eventually discovered a stage adaptation of
Catherine Cookson's 'The Fifteen Streets'.
Several members voiced skepticism on hearing the
name Catherine Cookson, saying that it evoked a
'Mills and Boon' recoil effect. However, the
script told a very powerful and dramatic story
that would challenge all members of the group.
To make
life a little harder for ourselves we decided to
perform the play in the middle of the hall with
the audience on two sides. This gave a much more
intimate relationship between cast and audience
and heightened the dramatic impact of the
production. We were extremely lucky to assemble
an excellent team of people both on and off stage
that worked together superbly to make the show
happen. Our youngest cast member was 8 years old
and our oldest was 79 (a point which we are quite
proud of). The show was performed for three
nights to capacity audiences and helped to
establish us in a strong position for our future
ventures.
