"Cinderella"
- January 1999
Many of the
members of our group have been involved in
amateur pantomimes. We decided that because no
group within the town were producing a pantomime
and we had the resources to do so, that we would
help to keep the tradition alive.
The members
agreed that the traditional pantomime is always
appealing and the obvious choice seemed to be
"Cinderella". As with any pantomime it
was a lot of fun to rehearse, but equally a great
deal of hard work. A popular misconception
(especially with some amateurs) is that because
you have more scope to adlib or interact with the
audience, that the whole production is more
relaxed and therefore less serious. However, the
opposite is true, as it takes far more self
control and discipline to work with an audience
and not go too far. Having said that, I
personally believe that amateur pantomime, that
is done well, can be much more enjoyable than a
slick (almost clinical), professional panto.
"Cinderella"
was performed in a more traditional manner using a proscenium
arch stage and an extension apron. We played for seven
performances, with the majority being sell outs. We received
many favorable comments from our audience and many said that
they enjoyed our performance more than the local professional
production.
